What Is Body Literacy?

What would it mean to become more literate in the body you already live in?

The Idea

Body Literacy isn't fascia expertise. It isn't anatomy memorized, or every sensation perfectly interpreted.

It's simpler than that — and, I think, more useful:

You can learn to understand your own body better than you do today.

Not perfectly. Not diagnostically. Not magically. The relationship between you and your body can become more informed.

Your body isn't something you simply have. It's something you can become increasingly literate in.

What It Can Look Like

Body Literacy is less about anatomy, more about observation. A few examples of the shift:

Instead of “I always have neck pain” Body Literacy notices “It always appears after long drives.”
Instead of “My shoulder is tight” Body Literacy notices “It's only tight when I'm stressed.”
Instead of “My hips are uneven” Body Literacy notices “I always stand on my right leg while cooking.”
Instead of “I sleep terribly” Body Literacy notices “I always wake with my jaw clenched.”
Instead of “I just have bad posture” Body Literacy notices “I always shift my weight to one side.”
Instead of “My hamstrings are tight” Body Literacy notices “Stretching helps for twenty minutes, but never changes the pattern.”

What It Is Not

  • Not diagnosis, and not certainty. I lean on words like likely, can correlate, not always — on purpose.
  • Not expertise-building. The point isn't to become a fascia nerd.
  • Not dependence. I'm not here to hand you answers.

Body Literacy isn't “I'll teach you the answers.” It's “I'll teach you how to ask your body better questions.”

Why It Matters

Better observations lead to better decisions. That's always been the order:

Observe → Understand → Respond → Trust

Self-trust matters — it just isn't the first promise. You can't skip the middle. Body Literacy matters because it helps you make decisions based on clearer observations rather than assumptions. Over time, that naturally develops greater confidence and trust in your own experience.
